The Art of Upcycling

You hear it everywhere... Reduce, reuse, recycle. Today, we'll be focusing on the most fun and exciting R (in my opinion) - REUSE!

These are a couple of fun DIY projects that you can make with items you may have just lying around. So instead of pitching them into the trash, upcycle them into an awesome craft!

Coffee Sleeve Jewelry

(Project and photo from Saved by Love Creations)

There's no feeling guilty for that daily Starbucks run anymore. Instead of throwing away every single coffee sleeve you get, turn them into all sorts of jewelry. From necklaces to bracelets to earrings, this tutorial breaks down exactly how to make accessories that people will love (and they won't even notice that it's just cardboard)!

DIY Soy Candles

(Project and photo from Ruffled)

Quickly turn leftover glass bottles into beautiful, nice-smelling, eco-friendly candles. Follow this tutorial to learn how to upcycle over and over again, because once it burns out, you can wash out the jar and use it for another candle!

Cereal Box Sunburst Mirror

(Project and photo from By Stephanie Lynn)

Turn cereal boxes (or any other pieces of cardboard) into a stunning wall decoration using this tutorial. While it shows exactly how to make the "sunburst" pattern, there is no limit to what you can do with these cardboard strips. You'll love it, guests will love it, and no one will be able to tell that it started as a cereal box!

Tire Dog Bed

(Project and photo from Practically Functional)

If you've got an extra tire laying around, and the only thing you can think of to do with it is make a planter for your garden, look no further! This tutorial shows you how to transform it into a dog bed for your little furry friend.

Furoshiki Present Wrapping

(Project and photo by Leesa Hagan)

Not really a craft, but if you were planning on gifting any of your new handmade products (or anything else really), this is a great zero-waste way to do that. Instead of using wrapping paper that will go straight into the trash, wrap the gift up in fabric. It's unique, pretty, and can be the gift also! Gifting someone a blanket or scarf? Use that as the "wrapping paper." It's reusable, sustainable and saves money. If you don't have any fabric lying around, check out this site. It has a lot of options for ethically sourced fabric options!

BONUS: Present Toppers

(Project and photo from Older and Wisor)

Here's a quick craft to top your Furoshiki presents. Use leftover cardboard from soda can boxes, cereal boxes or any other box your household uses. This tutorial shows you how to make cute bows to top all of your gifts!
